I crochet very tightly and use an H hook and cotton worsted weight yarn. You may want to use an F or G hook depending on the size you want your coaster to be. My finished coaster (the circle part) is 3 1/4″ in diameter. Stick with cotton yarn. Acrylic will get really yucky when wet.
slst = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
ea = each
st(s) = stitch(es)
ch = chain
Start by working 8 single crochet’s into a magic circle with the pink yarn, fasten off.
Round 1: Attach the color yarn you want to use for kitty and work 2 sc’s in ea st around for 16 sts. Do Not Join. You are going to work rounds continuously without joins so it is smooth.
Round 2: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next st* repeat from* to* around for 24 sts.
Round 3: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next 2 sts* repeat from* to* around for 32 sts.
Round 4: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next 3 sts* repeat from* to* around for 40 sts.
Round 5: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next 4 sts* repeat from* to* around for 48 sts.
Slst in next 3 sts, ch 18, slst in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in ea of the next 2 chains, 2sc in ea of the next 3 chains, sc in ea of the next 10 chains. Leave the last chain empty. Skip the next unworked st on the cat’s body, slst in the next.
Slst in the next 21 sts, ch 6, slst in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next ch, hdc in ea of the next 2 chains, skip the last chain. Skip the next st on the body, slst in the next, slst in the next 2 sts, ch 6, slst in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next ch, hdc in ea of the next 2 chains, skip the last chain. Skip the next st on the body, slst in the next st, slst in the next 18 sts. (the last 2 slst’s are going to be a little tougher because you are slip stitching over slst’s from before.
Now, remove your hook leaving the loop. Insert your hook into the next st from the BACK of the cat body (see Pic on left) and grab the loop with your hook and pull through, ch 1.
You will now be working on the back of the cat. We will be working on the original stitches from the sc’s from round 5 and NOT the slst stitches. (see Pic on right).
In the Back Loops Only, work the stitches in the () into each stitch across.
(sc), (hdc), (2 dc’s), (dc), (dc), (dc), (2 dc’s), (hdc), (sc), turn (11 sts)
Ch 1, now go back to working through both loops, (2 sc’s), (hdc), (2 dc’s), (2 dc’s), (dc), (dc), (dc), (2 dc’s), (2 dc’s), (hdc), (2 sc’s), turn (17 sts)
Slst in next 5 sts, ch 5, slst in 2nd from hook, sc in next st, hdc in next, dc in next, skip the next 2 sts on cat, slst in next, ch 5, slst in 2nd from hook, sc in the next st, hdc in the next, dc in the next, skip the next 2 sts on cat, slst in next, slst in last 5 sts, fasten off and weave in end. I add buttons for eyes and even some whiskers! 🙂

Are the stiches in the () worked into the tail as well or just the body.
Hi Karrie… you just finished the last round, you turned tour kitty and inserted the hook from the back. Your now working away from the tail, so, no, the tail does not get any more stitches.

Hello Anki….it only means that when you turn your work, you will have completed 11 stitches on that rowe.

How did you carry your yarn when you would slip stitch?
It’s very hard to explain without pics. Lots of trial and error. Within a couple of months I should have my new site up and running. It’s going to be a tutorial site. Until then I have taken a leave from my work due to personal issues. Keep checking back. The new site will be this same address. 🙂
I LOVE these! I have made multiple coasters in solid colors, but every time I try to use the tapestry crochet technique to crochet a TUXEDO cat coaster I can never figure out when to switch the colors so it all lines up. Could you help me out?
Hi Stephanie…it’s really just a process of trial and error. I may have exact step by step patterns in the future, but that will be very time consuming and I can’t tell you when I’ll have them ready. I’m working on an upgraded website, so keep an eye out! 🙂

Hi. Please can you confirm the following

‘ Skip the next st on the body, slst in the next st, slst in the next 18 sts. (the last 2 slst’s are going to be a little tougher because you are slip stitching over slst’s from before.’ – do I put the hook through the sl st from befoe as well as the st from the previous round when making the last 2slt’s on this round – or do I ignore the earlier round with its sl sts and just put my hook through the actual st of the earlier round

As for your first paragraph, I’ve provided pictures for you, because it is confusing. The loop that you took your hook out of will be going into the next stitch.
And yes, you will be making slip stitches through all the stitches that your asking about in your second paragraph. That’s why they are a little bit tougher to do. 🙂

I LOVE THESE! And I’ve had MANY requests to make them pot holder/hot pad sized. While I’m an advanced crocheter, I’m not excellent at adjusting patterns, especially with “add-ons” such as the tail, legs and head. I am so confused about when turning the cat over and working on the backside; you said to remove the hook from the loop. What do I do with the loop? Leave it alone and continue to crochet into the backside? and I’m not sure where to start working on the back. Thanks so much ahead of time for your help (or anyone’s help).

I’ve copied the paragraph in the pattern where it tells you what to do with the loop:
“Now, remove your hook leaving the loop. Insert your hook into the next st from the BACK of the cat body (see Pic on left) and grab the loop with your hook and pull through, ch 1.”
If you look closely at the pictures, that will help you to know where to start your next stitch on the back. The pattern tells you that once you turn the cat over, you will be working in the back loops.

How much yarn would a set of 4 take and what would you charge for a set?
These look so great! I tried to make one and it looks OK overall, but it won’t lie flat (everything is curling in every direction) and the tail won’t stand up… Any suggestions?

Your welcome, Jasmine! I simply take one of the plys out of the piece off yarn (there are 4 plys so that leaves 3), then make a square knot to tie it to kitty’s fave. Then pull apart the other 3 plys on each side of the knot to make the whiskers. They don’t necessarily stay as pictured. I block my kitty’s before adding eyes or whiskers. 😊

Wanted to ask – I can’t find cotton yarn that size (I got only smaller for 3mm hook)

What size yarn are you using? I would imagine you could use 2 strands of smaller yarn. It just depends on the size you are using. The size I use is size 4 worsted weight. As I’ve used a 3mm hook with different sizes, I don’t really know what size yarn you are using from that description. 😦 I’m sorry. I would be happy to give you a better answer, if you could tell me the size of the yarn.

Did you treat them with anything to get them to stay stiff so they don’t curl at the edges, tail & legs?
No. I crochet very tightly is all. After blocking the tail will lie flat.
Duh, I forgot about blocking (I’m a very beginner crocheter)!

When working on the head, at the end of the first row the last nstruction is to turn (11 sts). Should the 11 sts be single crochet and should I not chain 1 before I turn? Super cute so far, thanks for the help!

The 11 sts are in the parentheses so they are not all sc. You will turn…then you’ll notice the next row says to ch 1 before starting your sts for row 2.

Where you have written in the brackets 2 dc’s and 2 sc’s, do you mean in one stitch to increase as you have not said how many stitches should be at the end of the round ?
Yes. Under the pics it says to work the stitches in the () into each stitch. So each () is a stitch from the previous row. 🙂 hope this helps!
Where she says (2dc) I did 2 x dc in the same stitch. And mine worked out perfectly first time. In most patterns I have seen, dc 2 means 1 x dc in the next 2 stitches, but 2dc means 2 x dc inn the next stitch or space.
Also she gives a stitch count at the end of each row so that can help you double check your work
