I crochet very tightly and use an H hook and cotton worsted weight yarn.  You may want to use an F or G hook depending on the size you want your coaster to be.  My finished coaster (the circle part) is 3 1/4″ in diameter.  Stick with cotton yarn.  Acrylic will get really yucky when wet.

slst = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

ea = each

st(s) = stitch(es)

ch = chain

Start by working 8 single crochet’s into a magic circle with the pink yarn, fasten off.

Round 1: Attach the color yarn you want to use for kitty and work 2 sc’s in ea st around for 16 sts. Do Not Join.  You are going to work rounds continuously without joins so it is smooth.

Round 2: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next st* repeat from* to* around for 24 sts.

Round 3: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next 2 sts* repeat from* to* around for 32 sts.

Round 4: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next 3 sts* repeat from* to* around for 40 sts.

Round 5: *work 2 sc’s in first st, sc in next 4 sts* repeat from* to* around for 48 sts.

Slst in next 3 sts, ch 18, slst in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in ea of the next 2 chains, 2sc in ea of the next 3 chains, sc in ea of the next 10 chains.  Leave the last chain empty.  Skip the next unworked st on the cat’s body, slst in the next.

Slst in the next 21 sts, ch 6, slst in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next ch, hdc in ea of the next 2 chains, skip the last chain.  Skip the next st on the body, slst in the next, slst in the next 2 sts, ch 6, slst in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next ch, hdc in ea of the next 2 chains, skip the last chain.  Skip the next st on the body, slst in the next st, slst in the next 18 sts.  (the last 2 slst’s are going to be a little tougher because you are slip stitching over slst’s from before.

Now, remove your hook leaving the loop.  Insert your hook into the next st from the BACK of the cat body (see Pic on left) and grab the loop with your hook and pull through, ch 1.

You will now be working on the back of the cat.  We will be working on the original stitches from the sc’s from round 5 and NOT the slst stitches.  (see Pic on right).

cat butt5

In the Back Loops Only, work the stitches in the () into each stitch across.

(sc), (hdc), (2 dc’s), (dc), (dc), (dc), (2 dc’s), (hdc), (sc), turn (11 sts)

Ch 1, now go back to working through both loops, (2 sc’s), (hdc), (2 dc’s), (2 dc’s), (dc), (dc), (dc), (2 dc’s), (2 dc’s), (hdc), (2 sc’s), turn (17 sts)

Slst in next 5 sts, ch 5, slst in 2nd from hook, sc in next st, hdc in next, dc in next, skip the next 2 sts on cat, slst in next, ch 5, slst in 2nd from hook, sc in the next st, hdc in the next, dc in the next, skip the next 2 sts on cat, slst in next, slst in last 5 sts, fasten off and weave in end.  I add buttons for eyes and even some whiskers! 🙂

    Hi,
I love this patter. Have made several as gifts to cat-lover friends. How do I send you pictures of mine! Thank you for the pattern.

  2. Susan Ziolkowski December 16, 2017 / 5:43 pm

How do I print this pattern.

  3. Karrie Wood December 8, 2017 / 12:50 pm

Ok thank you. I didnt catch where it says to turn. Now it makes more sense.

  4. Karrie Wood December 8, 2017 / 12:20 pm

Are the stiches in the () worked into the tail as well or just the body.

    • Jan Christopher December 8, 2017 / 12:26 pm

Hi Karrie… you just finished the last round, you turned tour kitty and inserted the hook from the back. Your now working away from the tail, so, no, the tail does not get any more stitches.

  5. Donna November 13, 2017 / 7:03 am

Thank you so much for sharing your pattern. I was wondering how you made the whiskers? Along with their rear, they add so much character to your kitties!😊

    • Jan Christopher November 13, 2017 / 7:07 am

Thank you, Donna. I took 1 strand out of the yarn (there are 4) and tired the remaining three onto the face then separated them. 🙂

  6. Claudine August 21, 2017 / 9:36 am

The funniest crochet pattern yet…made me laugh ot loud!!!
    Thank you!

  7. Wendy June 18, 2017 / 7:41 pm

What yarn did you use for the whiskers and how did you make them? Thank you.

    • Jan Christopher June 18, 2017 / 7:50 pm

I used the same yarn as for the kitty and separated the strands. 🙂

    Love this ,thank you

  9. Deidre January 22, 2017 / 2:55 pm

Thanks so much I made this for a colleague and it came out perfectly first time! I am so chuffed because usually I have to frog at least once in a project 🙂 and I was working in black which is extra hard so even more impressed with myself lol

  10. anki mijatovic October 30, 2016 / 11:10 am

Hey! I really love this pattern 🙂
I’m a German crochet beginner and I almost completed this guide. Under the pictures it says “turn (11 sts)”, what exactly does this mean..? I couldn’t find a solution which made sense.
    Thanks in advance! :3

    • Jan Christopher October 30, 2016 / 11:12 am

Hello Anki….it only means that when you turn your work, you will have completed 11 stitches on that rowe.
      Jan 🙂

      • anki mijatovic October 30, 2016 / 11:17 am

Oh that was too easy.. 😀
Thanks a lot and have a great day 🙂

  11. Jennifer Douglas October 16, 2016 / 7:20 am

What size buttons do you use? I’m having trouble with the placement.. thanks

      • Jennifer Douglas October 16, 2016 / 2:40 pm

        Thank you!!!

      • Sadie November 22, 2016 / 11:26 pm

Exactly the question I had! Thank you!

  12. Stephanie September 23, 2016 / 4:35 pm

How did you carry your yarn when you would slip stitch?

    • Jan Christopher September 24, 2016 / 6:50 am

It’s very hard to explain without pics. Lots of trial and error. Within a couple of months I should have my new site up and running. It’s going to be a tutorial site. Until then I have taken a leave from my work due to personal issues. Keep checking back. The new site will be this same address. 🙂

  13. Stephanie September 23, 2016 / 4:07 pm

I LOVE these! I have made multiple coasters in solid colors, but every time I try to use the tapestry crochet technique to crochet a TUXEDO cat coaster I can never figure out when to switch the colors so it all lines up. Could you help me out?

    • Jan Christopher September 23, 2016 / 4:11 pm

Hi Stephanie…it’s really just a process of trial and error. I may have exact step by step patterns in the future, but that will be very time consuming and I can’t tell you when I’ll have them ready. I’m working on an upgraded website, so keep an eye out! 🙂

  14. Alicia September 1, 2016 / 1:15 pm

These are so cute!! I’m on my third cat and I’m experimenting with tapestry crocheting now, so thank you!!!

  15. Jacqueline Panter August 30, 2016 / 8:58 am

Hi. Please can you confirm the following

‘Now, remove your hook leaving the loop. Insert your hook into the next st from the BACK of the cat body (see Pic on left) and grab the loop with your hook and pull through, ch 1.’ – do I put the hook through the corresponding st on from the back, to pull the loop through, or do I put the hook through the next stich along on the back?

‘ Skip the next st on the body, slst in the next st, slst in the next 18 sts. (the last 2 slst’s are going to be a little tougher because you are slip stitching over slst’s from before.’ – do I put the hook through the sl st from befoe as well as the st from the previous round when making the last 2slt’s on this round – or do I ignore the earlier round with its sl sts and just put my hook through the actual st of the earlier round

    Thank you!

    • Jan Christopher August 30, 2016 / 9:05 am

As for your first paragraph, I’ve provided pictures for you, because it is confusing. The loop that you took your hook out of will be going into the next stitch.

And yes, you will be making slip stitches through all the stitches that your asking about in your second paragraph. That’s why they are a little bit tougher to do. 🙂

      Hope this helps!

  16. Darbi August 27, 2016 / 8:30 pm

I LOVE THESE! And I’ve had MANY requests to make them pot holder/hot pad sized. While I’m an advanced crocheter, I’m not excellent at adjusting patterns, especially with “add-ons” such as the tail, legs and head. Could you possibly help me with a stitch count for longer tail & legs, and placement of legs and head? Thank you so much for this free pattern!

  17. Cindy Thomas July 29, 2016 / 3:43 am

Thanks Jan for the pattern Ive make 2 now starting on a 3e works up easily . I enjoyed makeng them for all my cat loving friends

  18. Jenice June 25, 2016 / 1:59 am

I am so confused about when turning the cat over and working on the backside; you said to remove the hook from the loop. What do I do with the loop? Leave it alone and continue to crochet into the backside? and I’m not sure where to start working on the back. Thanks so much ahead of time for your help (or anyone’s help).

    • Jan Christopher June 25, 2016 / 5:54 am

      Hi Jenice,
I’ve copied the paragraph in the pattern where it tells you what to do with the loop:

“Now, remove your hook leaving the loop. Insert your hook into the next st from the BACK of the cat body (see Pic on left) and grab the loop with your hook and pull through, ch 1.”

If you look closely at the pictures, that will help you to know where to start your next stitch on the back. The pattern tells you that once you turn the cat over, you will be working in the back loops.

  19. Joan M Nickle June 6, 2016 / 5:49 pm

How much yarn would a set of 4 take and what would you charge for a set?

  20. Brittany May 30, 2016 / 9:50 pm

These look so great! I tried to make one and it looks OK overall, but it won’t lie flat (everything is curling in every direction) and the tail won’t stand up… Any suggestions?

    • Jan Christopher May 30, 2016 / 9:58 pm

Thank you! When you’re finished, shape your kitty and then block it and everything will lie flat. 🙂

      • Joan M Nickle June 6, 2016 / 5:52 pm

How much would these take to make a set of 4. I have people wishing to buy

      • Jan Christopher June 6, 2016 / 6:01 pm

Hi Joan, I can get about 4-5 kitties from a super size sugar n cream ball. At the beginning of the pattern there is a link for purchasing the coasters. It depends on the style as to what the price would be. The link will take you to the Etsy listing. Read through the item details/description for ordering info and that will give you the price.

      • Brittany June 6, 2016 / 7:37 pm

Ok thanks! I’m fairly new to the crocheting world so I haven’t learned all the tips and tricks yet 🙂 This pattern was very well written so that even a beginner like me could follow it.

  21. Jasmine May 27, 2016 / 10:25 pm

Thank you for sharing this adorable (and very well written) pattern! Probably a silly question. I’m just trying to figure out how to put those cute whiskers on, so they will sit like that. And do you block it after you put the whiskers on? Thank you! 🙂

    • Jan Christopher May 28, 2016 / 7:00 am

Your welcome, Jasmine! I simply take one of the plys out of the piece off yarn (there are 4 plys so that leaves 3), then make a square knot to tie it to kitty’s fave. Then pull apart the other 3 plys on each side of the knot to make the whiskers. They don’t necessarily stay as pictured. I block my kitty’s before adding eyes or whiskers. 😊

      • Jasmine May 28, 2016 / 8:13 pm

Great! Thanks for the quick reply!!!

  22. Melissa Broers May 5, 2016 / 4:18 pm

Thank you so much for the free pattern! It was the best explained pattern I have done so far! My cat coaster actually came out! Thank you for being so clear! I made one for my mom on Mother’s Day:)

    • Jan Christopher May 5, 2016 / 4:52 pm

Your welcome! I’m so glad you enjoy it. I strive to make all my patterns very easy to understand. 🙂

  23. Nikki April 10, 2016 / 10:09 am

Would you be willing to do a video showing the steps? I’m still trying to learn to read patterns but I’m a visual learner and it’s just easier for me to see it being done.

    • Jan Christopher April 10, 2016 / 10:45 am

      Hi Nikki!
I’m so sorry, but I’m unable to at this time. Maybe in the future. I just can’t say when.

  24. Stella Lee @Purfylle April 8, 2016 / 1:55 am

These are just too cute for words. I’ve shared it in a post and I’ve used one of your images which I’ve set to link back here. Please let me know if that’s alright if you would prefer I didn’t include it in my post. The lady I made my coasters for was thrilled with them. Thank you so much for making it freely available to us all. http://www.purfylle.com/2016/04/crochet-cat-coasters.html

    • Jan Christopher April 8, 2016 / 7:23 am

Hi Stella! Thank you for your email. That’s purrrrfectly fine. LOL I’m glad you like the pattern!! 🙂

  25. Miri March 28, 2016 / 4:17 pm

This one are amazing! Thank you so much!
Wanted to ask – I can’t find cotton yarn that size (I got only smaller for 3mm hook)
If I’m making it with this yarn it’s becoming a shot coaster 🙂
Do you have any advice for how to make it bigger? I got to the tail and got stuck because 2 layers of SC for the tail aren’t enough thanks! 🙂

    • Jan Christopher March 28, 2016 / 4:44 pm

What size yarn are you using? I would imagine you could use 2 strands of smaller yarn. It just depends on the size you are using. The size I use is size 4 worsted weight. As I’ve used a 3mm hook with different sizes, I don’t really know what size yarn you are using from that description. 😦 I’m sorry. I would be happy to give you a better answer, if you could tell me the size of the yarn.

  26. Angie February 22, 2016 / 8:51 am

can we print this pattern off the lap top?

      • angie February 28, 2016 / 9:06 am

hi Sorry but I am in England and don’t know what a magic circle is as have only made afghan squares blanket before Please can you explain how to get one done. Thanks Angie

  27. Sandra Street February 16, 2016 / 11:17 am

How ADORABLE these coasters are! They will be a Purr-fect gift for my cat-loving friends! Thank you so much!

  28. chachtx January 29, 2016 / 1:00 am

Did you treat them with anything to get them to stay stiff so they don’t curl at the edges, tail & legs?

    • Jan Christopher January 29, 2016 / 6:50 am

No. I crochet very tightly is all. After blocking the tail will lie flat.

      • Chachtx January 29, 2016 / 9:05 am

Duh, I forgot about blocking (I’m a very beginner crocheter)!

This pattern is great and so well written that a beginner like me could easily follow it!! The only mistakes were from my lack of experience not your pattern. Thank you so much for sharing and your quick response to my question 😃

  29. Cher January 8, 2016 / 10:51 am

These are great! On the black and white ones how did you blend the colors in?

    • Jan Christopher January 8, 2016 / 10:53 am

      Hi Cher,
Thank you! I’m assuming you mean the Calico? I use a tapestry crochet technique.
      Happy Crocheting!

      • Cher January 8, 2016 / 2:54 pm

Hi! I’m talking about the black and white cat on the bottom right of the specialties. I have 2 black and white cats lol. Thank you!

  30. Tracy January 7, 2016 / 12:54 pm

When working on the head, at the end of the first row the last nstruction is to turn (11 sts). Should the 11 sts be single crochet and should I not chain 1 before I turn? Super cute so far, thanks for the help!

    • Jan Christopher January 7, 2016 / 1:04 pm

      Hi Tracy!
The 11 sts are in the parentheses so they are not all sc. You will turn…then you’ll notice the next row says to ch 1 before starting your sts for row 2.
      Hope this helps!

  31. Katheryne December 25, 2015 / 10:48 am

My friends are asking for these. Went to find the yarn, colors like you have and can’t find the colors you used. I have looked at several stores and from the list of brands you suggest. What brand did you use? Thanks for sharing this

    • Jan Christopher December 25, 2015 / 11:20 am

      Hi Katheryne.
I only listed the colors I’ve used. I bought some online as they aren’t available in the stores near me. Is there a specific color you’re asking about?

      • Katheryne December 25, 2015 / 12:36 pm

The orange and black and grey and black. I just finished a grey one, did you starch yours? Mine is a bit floppy. BTW thank you so much for replying so fast. Merry Christmas

  32. Maxine Miller November 21, 2015 / 12:23 am

    Love these, soo cute.

  33. Lorna Gallimore November 19, 2015 / 11:16 am

Where you have written in the brackets 2 dc’s and 2 sc’s, do you mean in one stitch to increase as you have not said how many stitches should be at the end of the round ?

    • Jan Christopher November 19, 2015 / 11:35 am

Yes. Under the pics it says to work the stitches in the () into each stitch. So each () is a stitch from the previous row. 🙂 hope this helps!

    • Deidre January 22, 2017 / 2:50 pm

Where she says (2dc) I did 2 x dc in the same stitch. And mine worked out perfectly first time. In most patterns I have seen, dc 2 means 1 x dc in the next 2 stitches, but 2dc means 2 x dc inn the next stitch or space.

Also she gives a stitch count at the end of each row so that can help you double check your work

      Hope this helps!

  34. Katherine November 5, 2015 / 8:51 pm

Love this idea! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m going to make a few for my boyfriend’s mother. Her birthday is coming up soon and I just know she will get a kick out of them.

  35. candy October 25, 2015 / 3:50 pm

thank you yours look so real great art work

  36. Judy Sutton October 19, 2015 / 8:43 am

This is just tooooo cute!!!! Everyone I know is going to want a set of these!!!

    • Kristi February 12, 2017 / 3:03 pm

I’m somewhat new to crochet. Do you have a utube video to go along with this pattern to help explain how to make this? I’m struggling a bit. Thank you

      • Jan Christopher February 12, 2017 / 3:07 pm

Not yet…I’m working on an improved website and I hope to have one in the future!

    • Susan Dzialo June 24, 2018 / 3:52 pm

I don’t understand some things in the directions such as when creating the coaster says don’t join.
      What does this mean?
Also, I’m not familiar with a magic circle??
I’m confused when trying to do this.
Do you have directions for beginner crocheting!
I love the curl in the kitties tail or the candy cane tail. How do I crochet that beautiful tail?
      Please help?

      • Jan Christopher June 25, 2018 / 7:59 am

        Hi Susan,
This may be a little too complicated for a beginner. I am going to be offering a crochet school through my new and updated website at http://www.uppercrustcrochet.com I suggest maybe looking into the school in the future 🙂 In the mean time, maybe try something a little easier for a beginner.
